Tonemapping verteilt die Helligkeitswerte eines Bildes mit hohem Dynamikumfang – etwa aus einer HDR-Verrechnung – so auf den begrenzten Umfang von Druck oder Monitor, dass sowohl Lichter als auch Schatten durchgezeichnet bleiben.
Dezent eingesetzt wirkt das Ergebnis natürlich; zu stark angewendet entstehen überzeichnete, unnatürliche Effekte. Für Großformatausgaben ist ein zurückhaltendes Tonemapping wichtig, damit das Bild auf großer Fläche ruhig und glaubwürdig wirkt.
