Tone Mapping

Category: Processing

Mapping a high dynamic range into the displayable range of print or screen without losing detail in highlights and shadows.

Tone mapping distributes the brightness values of a high-dynamic-range image – for example from an HDR merge – across the limited range of print or monitor so that both highlights and shadows remain detailed.

Applied subtly the result looks natural; applied too strongly it produces over-cooked, unnatural effects. For large-format output a restrained tone mapping is important so the image reads calm and believable across a large surface.
