Terapixel

Category: Capture

An image of at least one trillion pixels (1000 gigapixels), assembled from tens of thousands of frames. A single image in a special format – a rare special project.

A terapixel denotes an image resolution of one trillion pixels — a thousand times a gigapixel image and one million megapixels. Such images are created by stitching tens of thousands of frames into one single composite.

The result is a single image in a special format: the usual PSB format (Photoshop Big) is limited to around 90 gigapixels — including in our portal — and cannot hold a terapixel. As with 360-degree panoramas, projection-related distortions occur. Such an image is viewed via deep zoom based on a tile pyramid.

Terapixel images are rare special projects; the first was produced in 2012 as a feasibility study and is currently not publicly viewable.
