Without overlay: the room as it is. System capture from the Meta Quest 3, unaltered.

Capture from the Meta Quest 3: the same motif on the real wall, label with 2.64 × 1.59 m · 347 ppi

With AR overlay: the same motif on the real wall, label 2.64 × 1.59 m · 347 ppi. System capture from the Meta Quest 3, unaltered.

The AR/VR gallery from Gigapixel GmbH shows Portal motifs to scale in your own room before you buy: in AR on the real wall, ceiling or floor, in VR in a virtual designer house and, without a headset, as a 3D view in the browser.

Clicking an image opens the capture at full size.

Anyone who wants to decorate a wall, a ceiling or a floor with a Gigapixel motif sees the motif before purchase in the planned size in their own room – on the real wall, on the real ceiling, on the real floor. The AR view is the centrepiece. Anyone without AR-capable glasses can walk through a virtual designer house in VR; entirely without glasses, the gallery opens as a 3D view in the browser.

Selection is made directly in the headset from all the motifs in the portal, from 100 megapixels up to the gigapixel range, all original shots without AI upscaling. The application runs in the browser of the headset, without an app, without a store and without installation.

Three ways into the gallery

Capture from the Meta Quest 3: the same motif on the real wall, label with 2.64 × 1.59 m · 347 ppi

AR: the motif on the real wall

The headset blends the motif into the real room and, if desired, snaps it onto the wall, ceiling or floor. Size, height, rotation and tilt can be adjusted freely, with exact dimensions if desired.

VR: in the virtual designer house

Anyone without an AR-capable headset can use the VR view: a virtual designer house with six furnished rooms – living room, gallery, bedroom, bathroom, fitness room and plant room – with prepared surfaces for wall, ceiling and floor motifs, including a 6 × 4 metre stretch ceiling in the living room, a backlit stretch ceiling in the bathroom and an eight-metre-wide gallery wall. A "Light on/off" switch shows each motif either backlit or unlit.

Scale and ppi

Label of the AR view with a green dot: 2.64 × 1.59 m · 347 ppi

Detail from the capture with overlay: the label states size and resolution; the green dot stands for at least 80 ppi.

A label on the image shows the resulting resolution in ppi for every size set, with a traffic-light system: green from 80 ppi, amber between 60 and 79 ppi, red below that. This makes it visible before purchase how large a motif can be printed while remaining viable.

The search finds motifs by keyword and by photographer; photographers on the portal can thus see their own images in the room.

Devices

The technical basis is WebXR, the open standard for immersive content in the browser. The application has been tested on the Meta Quest 3; it is designed for WebXR-capable headsets. A link is all that is needed: it is opened in the headset's browser, one click starts AR or VR.

From the VR Gigapixel Gallery to the AR/VR Gallery

The AR/VR gallery follows on from the VR Gigapixel Gallery: developed as a prototype in 2019, first shown publicly in February 2020 at the central German crafts trade fair in Leipzig and released via the Steam platform in July 2020 – at that time with a limited selection of 48 motifs. The new gallery was developed completely afresh as a web application, shows the entire portfolio and no longer needs a store for standalone headsets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see a wall art print in original size in my room before buying?

Yes. Anyone who wants to decorate a wall, a ceiling or a floor with a Gigapixel motif sees the motif before purchase in the planned size in their own room – on the real wall, on the real ceiling, on the real floor. To the knowledge of Gigapixel GmbH, this is the first image portal to show its motifs in the headset at original resolution and to scale on wall, ceiling and floor; previous offerings from other providers work with a smartphone and show framed images on the wall.

Which headset do I need?

The application has been tested on the Meta Quest 3; it is designed for WebXR-capable headsets. The technical basis is WebXR, the open standard for immersive content in the browser.

Do I have to install an app?

No. The application runs in the browser of the headset, without an app, without a store and without installation. A link is all that is needed: it is opened in the headset's browser, one click starts AR or VR.

Does the gallery work without a VR headset?

Yes. Even without a headset, the designer house can be explored on screen.

What does the ppi traffic light show?

A label on the image shows the resulting resolution in ppi for every size set, with a traffic-light system: green from 80 ppi, amber between 60 and 79 ppi, red below that. This makes it visible before purchase how large a motif can be printed while remaining viable.

Which motifs are available to choose from?

Selection is made directly in the headset from all the motifs in the portal, from 100 megapixels up to the gigapixel range, all original shots without AI upscaling. The search finds motifs by keyword and by photographer; photographers on the portal can thus see their own images in the room.
