Capturing a series of the same subject at deliberately different exposure values – the basis for HDR processing.

Bracketing denotes the automatic or manual capture of several frames of the same subject at graded different exposures – typically one correctly exposed, one underexposed and one overexposed frame.

The aim is to cover the full brightness range of a scene across several frames. The resulting series forms the basis for HDR processing, in which the individual frames are combined into one image with extended dynamic range.

Besides exposure, bracketing can also relate to other parameters such as focus (focus bracketing for focus stacking).
