The brightness range between the darkest and brightest detailed image areas a sensor can capture in one exposure.
Dynamic range describes how many brightness levels between deepest shadow and brightest highlight a sensor can still capture with detail. If it is insufficient, shadows block up or highlights clip.
Very high-contrast scenes often exceed the dynamic range of a single exposure – here HDR techniques combine several exposures to capture the whole range. Mapping into the displayable range of print or screen is handled by tone mapping.
